“If a picture says more than a thousand words – and current internet dynamics tend to agree – what would a visual guide to the English vocabulary, contemporary and ‘webresentative’, look like? Ben West and Felix Heyes, two artists and designers from London (UK), found out when they replaced the 21,000 words found in your everyday dictionary with whatever shows up first for each word in Google’s image search. Behold Google – a 1240 page behemoth of JPGs, GIFs and PNGs in alphabetical order.
“We used two PHP scripts my brother Sam wrote for us,” says Ben about the process in an email. “The first one takes a text list of dictionary words and downloads each image in sequence, and the second lays them out into columns and outputs a PDF.” The PDF was then printed into a beautiful book – handbound, thumb indexed pages held together in a marbled paper hardcover, the golden Google logo clearly indifferent to whatever internet horrors it may contain.
“Conceptually it’s whatever you make of it,” writes Ben. The sad reality of shrinking attention spans, collective media fatigue or how an expert reference book is no match for the convenience of Google, for example. “It’s really an unfiltered, uncritical record of the state of human culture in 2012,” concludes Ben. So, how are we faring? “I would estimate about half of the book is revolting medical photos, porn, racism or bad cartoons.”

El mapa muestra a los artistas que participaron en la exposición ARTER “Second Exhibition” y los artistas y comisarios que participaron con ellos en anteriores exposiciones colectivas. El mapa contiene más de 5000 nombres provenientes de más de 700 exposiciones entre 1981 y 2010.

Graphcommons es ideal para el trabajo colaborativo. Cada usuario puede invitar a otras personas a participar en su visualización así como decidir si abre el resultado a la comunidad o lo mantiene en privado. También pueden extraerse imágenes de las visualizaciones, comunicar con los demás usuarios y seguir la evolución de los mapas sobre los que trabajan los otros miembros de la comunidad. En el estado actual de desarrollo, sólo es aplicable a redes de relaciones sencillas pues unicamente permite visualizar un tipo de relación cada vez.

Pero Graphcommons no es sólo una herramienta. También es un espacio de aprendizaje para profundizar en el análisis de networks, el pensamiento relacional o el diseño de información. ¿Cuál es la diferencia entre una relación de transmisión, que es aquella a través de la cual circulan flujos, y una de afiliación, que es la que determina la pertenencia de un elemento a un grupo o categoría? ¿Cuál es la diferencia entre la centralidad y la organización por clusters o grupos de afinidad? ¿Qué significado tiene la equivalencia entre nodos, los grados de densidad o el diámetro del network? Algunas de las respuestas se pueden encontrar aquí y en los talleres formativos que imparte el propio Arikan por todo el mundo.

Tactical Urbanism

The work we have done for the process of networking in the Tactical Urbanism workshop was as facilitators. That means we had designed an initial approach to an existent frame. We choose a very few rules to make the process understandable to all the participants and then we liberate the process. At this step, we had to step back, so participants can go on without being influenced by our previous thinking.

At the beginning this network process may had be seen as a blurred cloud of independent drops of ideas. At the end, the cloud evolves with the internal and external dynamics of the whole environment. Usually the drops of all these ideas fall down as if we were in the middle of a storm. We think the cases of study researched by the participants and their proposals will become the rain that may help to grown up better actions for the Dreamhamar process and the Stortorget Square in Hamar.
